A Texas police officer was killed in a shootout during a domestic dispute late Wednesday that also left a suspect dead.
The incident happened at about 11 p.m. when Cameron and Rockdale police responded to the report of a shooting in Cameron, KCEN-TV reports. When officers reached the scene, the woman who had called 9-1-1 had fled to a nearby store after she was grazed by a bullet.
A gun battle erupted between police and the suspect. A Cameron police officer and the suspect were struck in the exchange; the officer was taken to the hospital, where he later died, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
"You hear about these things in big cities, but there's no town or community that's immune from domestic violence or any type of violence for that matter," said Sgt. Bryan Washko. "That's why there's always caution when officers go to work every day. They're always prepared to face evil."
The identities of the officer and the suspect were not released. The shooting is under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
